Temporary, Off-Site or “Tent” Sales
A dealer may hold a temporary sale at a location away from the established place of business, but only within the county of licensure. This may include a “tent sale,” an auto show, or a similar event during which vehicles may be displayed or sold for a specified length of time. (See Dealer Manual Chapter 1, Section 1-10)
Whatever temporary event you are holding, make sure all required documentation is submitted to the Michigan Department of State (MDOS) ahead of time to ensure compliance
Key Reminders:
- There is no fee to obtain a license for a temporary sale.
- The sale must take place within your county of licensure.
- All paperwork should be submitted at least 15 days prior to the start of your sale.
Required Documentation:
- Vehicle Dealer Supplemental Location Application (Pages 1–2)
- Michigan Vehicle Dealer Close Out Statement for the temporary location
- Authorization to sell new vehicles at the temporary location, either:
- a franchise approval letter, or
- a self-certification statement confirming your authority to sell new vehicles at the location (or indicating that only used vehicles will be sold). [Download a sample Word doc]
Dealers may submit completed paperwork through their CARS e-Services account.
Restriction: No temporary sales locations are permitted outside the dealer’s county of licensure. Additionally, if a dealer is not allowed Sunday Sales in their county, the dealer may not conduct a Temporary Sale on a Sunday.
